The Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has said it is not in a position to intervene in criminal justice matters after Kimilili Member of Parliament was allegedly involved in a shooting altercation that left one person dead.
IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati said he cannot in any way interfere in matters that concern criminal justice urging the detectives to bring to book the culprits.
“On the issue of Kimilili Member of Parliament (MP) Didmus Barasa issue, I believe justice will be done and those found culpable will be brought to book, the commission cannot in any way interfere on matters that concern the criminal justice,” Chebukati says.
According to a police report, the incident occurred when Brian Khaemba, who is seeking to unseat the legislator went to the Chebukwabi polling station at around 6 pm to witness the counting of the votes.
The police report seen by The Informer went on to state that “Didmus Barasa withdrew a pistol and aimed at Khaemba’s aide namely Brian Olunga and shot him on the forehead where he profusely bled.”
It indicated that the aide was rushed to the Kimilili Sub-County hospital where he succumbed while undergoing treatment.
“Scene visited by the police accompanied by Scenes of Crime Personnel from Bungoma County, where the scene was processed and documented,” stated the police report.
Homicide detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) have since launched a manhunt for the legislator after the alleged fatal shooting of his opponent’s aide Olunga at Chebukwabi Primary School last night.
Olunga was an aide to Barasa’s arch rival Brian Khaemba, a former Magistrate at Kiambu Law Courts.
Defense Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has since castigated the act by Barasa while at the same time urging the relevant security apparatus to heighten their search for the outspoken lawmaker.
“It’s unfortunate that during this election time, guns are in the wrong hands that have mastered the art of killing innocent people. We call upon DCI, G_NPS, and IEBCKenya to hold Didmus Barasa accountable for killing an aide to our candidate Bryan Khaemba,” CS Wamalwa.
Police say they are yet to arrest Barasa who is said to be on the run after the heinous incident.
