Marsabit leaders have developed a practical road map and implementation plan for the interventions needed to achieve lasting peace in the region.
This is after the National Cohesion and Integration Commission(NCIC) held peace talks with Marsabit leaders last week for peace in the county.
In a ststement, NCIC Chairman Samuel Kobia said the leaders resolved firmly to have personal and collective responsibility in the implementation of the road map.
“The resolutions of the meeting shall be forwarded to the National security Advisory Council for consideration,” he said.
The meeting followed a directive by President Uhuru Kenyatta when he met Marsabit leaders last week ordering for lasting peace in Marsabit.
The two-day meeting took place at the Kenya School of Government and ample time was taken to cover all the challenges of peace and conflict in Marsabit.
The meeting brought together Marsabit Governor, Senators, Women Representative, Members of Parliament, the county speaker, leaders of majority and minority of Marsabit County Assembly and the inter religious council.
Last week, the commission called upon Inspector General of Police to bring to book the perpetrators of the ongoing ethnic violence in Marsabit County.
Kobia also called on the County, National Government, and humanitarian agencies to support the internally displaced families.
“We reiterate that the Commission together with other Government agencies have commenced investigations to bring to book the masterminds of these conflicts. We assure the people of Marsabit and the nation at large that we shall continue to discharge our mandate without fear or favour and will bring all wrongdoers and mongers of hate crimes to book, ” Kobia noted.
He condemned the ongoing ethnic violence between the Borana, Gabra, and Rendille communities as absurd.
The killings left a number of people dead and displaced thousands of the residents since the beginning of the year.
Thousands of livestock have been stolen and several hundred houses torched.
