CUE probes fake degrees scandal at MMUST

The Commission for University Education (CUE) has launched investigations into alleged fraud and irregularities in the awarding of degrees at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).

In a statement issued yesterday, CUE said reports circulating across media platforms suggest some individuals may have received academic qualifications without proper admission or registration.

The Commission termed the allegations serious, warning they could undermine academic integrity and erode public confidence in Kenya’s higher education system if proven true.

CUE Secretary and Chief Executive Officer Mike Kuria said a multidisciplinary team has been constituted to conduct a comprehensive and objective review.

The probe will examine whether due process was followed in the admission, registration, and eventual awarding of degrees.

“Any individuals or entities found culpable of misconduct will be held accountable in accordance with the law,” Kuria said, urging the public to remain calm and avoid speculation as investigations continue.

The investigation follows a directive by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, issued on April 1, 2026, instructing CUE to verify the academic credentials of some recent graduands at MMUST.

The issue has drawn wider concern, with economist Mukhisa Kituyi questioning the credibility of graduation records. He claimed some names appear on graduation lists despite individuals never attending classes.

CUE says the outcome of the investigation will guide appropriate action, including possible sanctions, as it seeks to safeguard the credibility of university qualifications in Kenya.
