EACC targets governors, county officials in widening corruption probe
Five sitting governors and eleven former governors are under the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) radar over allegations of embezzlement of public funds, conflict of interest, money laundering, and possession of unexplained wealth, among other offenses under the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.
EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamud made the disclosure during a media briefing yesterday which highlighted the work performed by the authority since the year began.
“The commission is at an advanced stage of investigating five sitting governors and eleven former governors. These investigations relate to allegations of embezzlement of public funds, conflict of interest, money laundering, and possession of unexplained wealth, among other offenses,” Mohamud stated.
In order to address irregular recruitments, manipulation of payroll and payments of irregular allowances, embezzlement of mortgage and car loan funds at the counties, the anti-graft authority is actively pursuing cases worth approximately Sh1.6 billion involving 822 county officials.
While acknowledging the frustration of Kenyans, especially the youths, about corruption in the country, Mohamud has assured the country that the Commission will upscale both its preventive and enforcement mandates geared towards effectively combating corruption.
“There is a continued feeling by Kenyans, especially the youthful population, which the level of corruption in the country is on the increase. I assure everyone that EACC will upscale both its preventive and enforcement mandates geared towards effectively combating corruption in the country,” the CEO stated.
“I commend all those championing and demanding greater accountability in both public and private sectors. I express the Commission’s willingness and Commitment to work with every one of you to weed out corruption in our country,” he added.
Recent legislative reforms, including the enactment of the Conflict of Interest Act, 2025, the Anti-Corruption Laws (Amendment Bill), and the Whistleblower Protection Bill have been part of the commitment in the fight against corruption.
