Sonko employee admits to stealing phone worth Sh55,000

A Nairobi court has convicted an employee of former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko with stealing a mobile phone valued Ksh 55,000 belonging his boss.
Appearing before the Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Dolphina Alego, the employee, Dedan Wamuya Mburu alias Kababa, admitted to committing the offence on February 10 this year at Matumbato Road in Nairobi’s Upperhill area.
CCTV footage played before the court revealed Mburu taking the phone from a child and then putting it in his pocket before walking away.
In his defence, Mburu told the court that he took the phone and later brought it back to the former governor. However, his bid to clear himself was futile since the footage did not show him taking it back.
In mitigation, he prayed the court for leniency citing that he is a family man with young children and is the sole breadwinner,
“Your honour, I pray this honourable court to be lenient to me considering I have a young family and the sole breadwinner.”
The magistrate directed the investigating officer to produce a pre-sentence report on February 18 when Mburu will be sentenced.
The magistrate also ordered that he be held in custody until then.
