DCI detains four linked to violent robbery in Embakasi, Nairobi

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is holding four men allegedly found with a fuel tank and ignition keys of a motorcycle stolen at a private company in Embakasi, Nairobi where security guards, drivers and turn boys were found lying down tied with shoelaces by criminals.

The four include Sammy Keya, Samuel Waithaka, Joseph Kung’u and Peter Mwangi who are in custody at the Embakasi police station where the DCI is detaining them while carrying out investigations into the incident.

The four were rounded up in Kariokor in Starehe Sub County after a private security company’s officials together with the police traced the motorcycle stolen at the company’s offices using a tracking device affixed on it.

The motorcycle was stolen at Kentra Developers where the private security company’s security guards were providing security before they were overpowered by eight men who raided the firm’s offices while armed with crude weapons.

The tracking device was showing the motorcycle in different locations meaning it was on the move as the police pursued those riding it.

Corporal Achieng Amolo of Embakai DCI offices told a Makadara law court that the fuel tank was found placed beside two motorcycles and the four men near it pointed at the exact place the fuel tank was placed.

Cpl. Achieng said one of the men had the ignition keys of the motorcycle and another acknowledged that he knew the one who gave him the motorcycle.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the four suspects were aware of the location of the motorcycle and the four suspects were aware of the location of the motorcycle and made no efforts to report or explain its presence,” stated Cpl. Akinyi in her affidavit filed in the court.

“One of them was found with the ignition key to the stolen motorcycle and was observed attempting to pass it to a second individual upon police interrogation suggesting an intention to hide or shift responsibility.”

Cpl. Achieng said she is investigating a case of robbery with violence contrary to section 296 (2) of the Penal Code

The matter under investigation was prompted by a report made at the Mombasa Road police station by the Director of Flashbase Security Company Dominic Kisavi who reported a robbery incident at the Kentra Developers offices.

Kisavi told police that his operations manager had reported to him that guards at Kentra Developers offices had been attacked and robbed of a missing motorcycle KMGP 154M stolen.

“The reportee (Kisavi) visited the location of the robbery where they found security guards, drivers and turn-boys tied with shoelaces and all lying on the ground,” stated Cpl. Akinyi.

The detective was seeking orders of the court to detain the four suspects to aid in investigations. The orders were granted by Principal Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe.

Cpl. Akinyi said some of the suspects involved in the robbery are still at large and the suspects have information which may assist in locating and apprehending them.

DCI needs to conduct an identification parade to eliminate or place the suspects at the scene of the crime, conduct forensic analysis of the suspects’ mobile phones together with call data records to establish whether the four were in communication with any other perpetrators of the robbery.

Also under investigation is ownership of the premises where the fuel tank was recovered and the suspects arrested.
