Mount Kenya University partners with global institutions to widen its network
Mount Kenya University (MKU) has patnered with global institutions to widen it’s network and impact on society.
According to MKU Chancellor, Prof. John Struthers, the collaborations will continue to 2024 that will embrace the internationalization agenda of higher education.
In March, MKU and Geneva based United Nation Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) signed a partnership that will focus on curriculum development, research and training as the institute seeks to widen its network in other African nations.
The University said the partnership will be implemented through joint research, university training programs, short courses, workshops and outdoor activities targeting public and private institutions such as police, National and County Governments, learning institutions and hospitality sector and youth groups in East African countries.
“The memorandum of understanding on the partnership was signed at the university’s main campus in Thika by the institution’s Vice Chancellor Prof Deogratius Jaganyi and Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director at UNITAR, Nikhil Seth,” stated the institution.
MKU has also renewed its six-year partnership with the Danish Refugee Council, which this year awarded scholarships to more than 30 leaders to study at the university.
The institution also secured the International Junior Nurse Fellowship by the Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust (BDCFT) in the United Kingdom.
Senior nursing students at MKU will be competitively selected to take part in the 12 month virtual training.
In July, the university was granted the opportunity to serve as the United Nations Academic Impact(Unai) SDG10 – Reduced Inequalities Hub for a period of three years by United Nations.
This was after UN commended the institution’s efforts in reducing human inequalities in the region.
MKU Vice chancellor Prof Deogratius Jaganyi said during 2019-2010 academic year, in partnership with Partners for Care, MKU donated wheel chairs to the Persons Enabled Differently from Thika district.
“The university will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Association of Persons Enabled Differently to engage in further areas of collaboration,” he said.
The VC said the number of students who are enabled differently at MKU has increased significantly within the last few years.
As such, the University offers courses and programmes to empower the general population in working and assisting Persons Enabled Differently with communities to achieve their goals in life.
Further, he said that the institution will continue to welcome Persons Enabled Differently and they shall do their best to continue championing the mission of reducing inequalities with the communities.
“Top on our agenda is to assist persons enabled differently achieve their life aspirations,” he added.
