Varsity side Strathmore Leos handed rugby lessons by Menengai Oilers in Nakuru
Menengai Oilers handed varsity side Strathmore Leo’s vital rugby a 12 – 07 loss at the Nakuru Athletic Club, Nakuru county.
Courtesy the Nakuru-based team coached by former Kenya sevens player Gibson Weru top the current local Seven’s series with 94 points four points ahead of the circuit defending Champions KCB RFC.
The bankers were coached by Kenya sevens legend Dennis Mwanja who finished fourth after losing 21 – 10 to Homeboyz in the third-place playoff.
In the final, Oilers scored two tries converting one against Leo’s one converted try.
Most Valuable Player in the tourney George Ooro gifted the Oilers a scrum which Geoffrey Ominde offloaded to Sikuta but Beldad Ogeta missed the try in the right corner.
Scrum-half Steve Amunga scored their first try for the Oilers after his own assist scoring in the centre post-Daniel Abukusi adding the extras to make it 07-00 at half-time.
In the second half, George Oroo had a knock-on winning a line out which was unsuccessful.
Leos won a line out, but the ball was stolen by Oilers Dennis Abukusi who scored their second try but missed the conversion.
Geoffrey Ominde was sin-binned a minute later allowing Brunson Madigu to lice through Oilers defense with Moseti Nyanya adding the extras.
The oilers maintained their lead-up to full-time winning their first leg in the series.
The teams head to Kakamega for the last leg of the circuit with each leg producing diverse winners along the way.
