Eyebrows as 1,000 pro-Maina Njenga youths march in Nairobi

Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga’s supporters held peaceful demonstration along Jogoo Road in Nairobi today morning amid heightened tensions following the recent spate of Gen Z demonstrations that turned chaotic leading to dozens of deaths at the hands of police officers.
The about 1,000 youths marched from Makadara Law Courts, where he appeared for hearing of a case filed against him for allegedly being in possession of firearms during protests against the high cost of living and punitive taxes led by ODM leader Raila Odinga in 2023.
They appeared to have the tacit approve of the police who allowed then to proceed with the march before dispersing peacefully. The demo, however, briefly caused tension and disrupted traffic along the busy thoroughfare.
The last time Njenga sparked political waves was when he organised a series of rallies in the Mt Kenya region to counter former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, who had started rallying the region behind him after falling out with President William Ruto leading to his impeachment.
At the time, Gachagua accused the State of sending Njenga to disrupt his meetings in the region.
Though he has since denounced involvement in violence and converted to Christianity, the mention of the Mungiki sect in the Mt Kenya region where it waged a violent extortion campaign before it a similarly brutal crackdown spearheaded by the Internal Security minister John Michuki brought it to a near end.
It is not clear whether the march was meant to show his return to politics at a time President Ruto is facing a revolt in Mt Kenya, which overwhelmingly voted for him in the 2022 election.
