Tension in Kisumu after police shot woman dead while dispersing crowd
Tension is high in Kisumu after residents turned against police officers for allegedly shooting dead a woman, a pillion passenger riding a motorbike while dispersing a rowdy crowd today morning.
The fatal shooting sparked sporadic protests temporarily halting operations in the lakeside city.
At the time of the shooting, the officers were chasing a matatu that ran over a traffic police road block where the crowd jeered them.
In the process of dispersing the mob, a bullet believed to have been fired by the police hit the lady.
Two other people are said to have sustained serious injuries and are recuperating in hospital.
In the ensuing melee, the group stormed Kisumu Central Police Station where they destroyed property before they were dispersed by teargas.
