Crime wave: Robbery, murder and mysterious deaths rock counties
In Ntimaru, Migori County, a 17-year-old Grade Seven pupil at Kohero Comprehensive School died after an alleged stabbing during an altercation among boys.
A wave of violent crime and unexplained deaths is raising concern across several counties, with police investigating a bank-related robbery in Murang’a, the death of a man whose partially burned body was found in Kisii and the fatal stabbing of a Grade Seven pupil in Migori.
In Murang’a South, police are investigating the robbery of a 63-year-old man who lost Sh700,000 shortly after withdrawing the money from Equity Bank’s Kenol branch.
The incident occurred on Thursday, September 17, at about 2.30pm in Kimololi. The victim, a resident of the area, called his 25-year-old son, Comfort Gift, to pick him up on a motorcycle after withdrawing the cash.
Their journey home was allegedly cut short when a Toyota Premio blocked their motorcycle. Three men reportedly emerged, armed with rungus and a knife, and ordered the two to lie down before taking the money. The suspects then punctured the motorcycle’s front tyre and escaped towards Kenol town.
Police visited the scene and the bank, where preliminary inquiries established that the victim had withdrawn the cash at an open teller. Investigators are pursuing the suspects amid concerns over an emerging pattern of bank-following robberies.
Police say some gangs monitor customers inside banking halls before following them, while others allegedly receive prior information about transactions. Investigators have previously uncovered cases involving suspected collusion by bank staff and other insiders.
In Kisii, detectives are investigating the death of 24-year-old Fredrick Murioki, whose partially burned and injured body was found beside a road in Ufanisi–Nyankongo on Thursday morning.
A local reported hearing a commotion at about 6.30am before discovering the body. Police processed the scene and moved the remains to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem.
Meanwhile, in Ntimaru, Migori County, a 17-year-old Grade Seven pupil at Kohero Comprehensive School died after an alleged stabbing during an altercation among boys.
Police said the incident occurred at about 7pm on Wednesday after a group from Masangora and Nyanderema clashed along the Gwitembe–Angata road. The group reportedly chased one another to a homestead where a family ceremony was taking place, where the victim was allegedly stabbed on the back and left arm.
Investigations into all three incidents are ongoing.
