Autopsy reveals Embu brothers died from multiple head and limb injuries

An autopsy report has revealed that the two Embu brothers who lost their lives at the hands of police officers died from multiple head and limb injuries.

Benson Njiru Ndwiga and Emmanuel Mutura Ndwiga had been arrested for allegedly flouting curfew hours and later found dead under unclear circumstances.

Giving the report, family advocate, Muchangi Gichugu, said the autopsy results revealed that Benson’s body had multiple injuries on the head and broken limbs.

“For Emmanuel, there were no bruises. Injuries in the head show he was hit with a hard object. So the issue of him jumping from the car is neither here nor there,” he said.

The advocate said that the family will now pursue criminal  justice after the autopsy results to ensure we find justice to the two brothers.

Dr Kamau Wangai, the pathologist at the Embu Level Five Referral Hospital, said that they were all in agreement with the results.

The family spokesperson, Felix Nthiga, said they will commence burial arrangements.

The examination reports however, contradicts police report that stated that they jumped out of a moving police motor vehicle while under arrest.

According to Embu East sub-county Police Commander Emily Garuiya, the victims could have jumped out of the moving police vehicle.

“While the suspects were being escorted to Manyatta Police Station the two jumped
from a fast moving vehicle without the knowledge of police officers only to realise
when they were counting the suspects,” she said.

She added that when her officers went back they found the bodies of the deceased on the road and they were collected and taken to the mortuary.

The vehicle with 10 suspects, was being driven by Constable James Mwaniki and who was with three other officers according to police report.

Two officers were in the front cabin with the driver, while two others, police Constable Sang and Constable Cherono, were guarding those under arrest.

The vehicle was heading to Karau Police Post to pick one more person who had been arrested before heading to Manyatta Police Post.

They claimed the duo opened the moving vehicle’s tent and jumped out without being noticed, 35 metres apart, and died on the spot.

“It happened that two unknown prisoners, names unknown, of about 25 years of age opened the police vehicle left side and jumped out without being noticed, 35 metres apart both dying on the spot,” read the police report.

The civilian oversight body against police, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) launched murder probe of the two brothers.

IPOA chairperson Ann Makori yesterday said they had deployed investigators from
Nairobi headquarters to beef up investigators from Meru so that they can conclude
the matter as soon as possible.
