KPL Mashemeji derby AFC Leopards, Gor Mahia ends barren draw
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League football fans yesterday thronged Nyayo Stadium for yet another one of the oldest derbies in the country of arc-rivals AFC leopards against visitors Gor Mahia which ended a barren draw.
Following the results, K’ogalo are now second placed in the league after leaders Nzoia Sugar as AFC Leopards are at the middle of the table; eighth placed.
AFC Leopards Belgian origin boss, Patrick Aussems, expressed dissatisfaction with the action-packed Mashemeji derby results insisting that his men were presumed the better side of the day as they failed to secure a win from bitter rivals Gor Mahia even though he was relieved with the draw.
“We were the better team because we created the most opportunities and dominated the play…. When you can’t win, you have to keep a clean sheet, and that’s exactly what we’ve been doing for the better part of the season,” argued Aussems.
Gor Mahia’s head coach Jonathan McKinstry, though not the results he expected, applauded his boys for showing a spirited fight during the match whose outcome saw them accumulate 24 points.
He added that his team playedthe game with a winning mentality even though the outcome turned otherwise.
“I think it was a fair result and a really good game of football. Each team played excellent football. We were on top for the majority of the first half, but we had to defend a lot in the final ten minutes,” McKinstry commented.
AFC Leopards will be looking to outshine their western rivals Vihiga United on February 4 at Bukhungu stadium as Gor Mahia welcomes Nairobi City Stars at Nyayo Stadium.
