Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has said that he will respect the decision made by the Supreme Court ahead of a legal showdown between Kenya Kwanza and Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition.
The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya leader said he had resolved to await the decision of the Supreme Court following the coalition party’s decision to contest the results of the August 9 presidential polls where William Ruto was declared winner.
“Kenyans held a peaceful election, which has been witnessed throughout the world. I want us to remain peaceful. Tolerance is the key, we advised Odinga to follow the way of the court, and he agreed. William Ruto also agreed to accept the outcome of the courts,” Atwoli said.
At the same time, Atwoli urged Kenyans to remain peaceful amid the post-election result intrigues as President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government prepares to pave the way for new leadership.
Speaking in Auki Village, Meru County, during the burial of the late COTU stalwart Isaiah Kubai on Friday, Atwoli called for calm from across the political divides.
“I want to thank the government because we were afraid that if the electioneering process prolongs then workers in the country could have been rendered jobless, but Joseph Kinyua made it clear that the country is at peace and everyone can go back to their normal routine,” Atwoli said.
Atwoli also assured workers across the country that peace would prevail throughout the nation during the process as the government had put in place contingency measures while at the same time cautioning social media users against inciting political groupings against one another as he outlined the dangers of violence.
