Aldai MP Marianne Kitany threatens to move censure motion against CS Justin Muturi

Aldai Member of Parliament Marianne Kitany has threatened to table a censure motion against Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi if he doesn’t resign for criticising the government over the series of abductions targeting online critics.

The legislator said the CS cannot critique a government that he is part of and that it would only be fair if he did it when out.

“CS Justin Muturi should resign. He cannot critique a government of which he is a part of; it simply isn’t possible. If he does not resign, I will sponsor a censure motion against him in Parliament,” Kitany stated.

The Aldai MP stated that the Cabinet is the highest decision-making body in the country and that Muturi should have sought answers concerning the abduction of his son formally without hitting out at the government in public.

She questioned why the former speaker had taken more than six months since the happening of the incident to talk about the issue.

“When you were the Attorney and now as the Cabinet Secretary, why did you not raise the issues of your son’s and other Kenyan children’s abductions? If you come and talk as you did to the media, what do you expect Kenyans to do if you as a CS you cannot speak to the president? This is a lack of respect for the president and the whole Cabinet,” she said.

“If the kid was abducted and released, you could report it to the police. Six months have lapsed since the boy was abducted and released and you have not reported, what are you waiting for? You are a Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, if you come complaining to them; what happens to them now? It shows you have been overwhelmed by work and should have resigned long ago. We call for your resignation so that you can come out and hit out at the government when you are out,” She added.

On Sunday, Muturi, hitherto a key insider in President William Ruto’s administration, sparked mixed reactions when he came out to do what a majority of people in his position would rather keep off, to point out arising issues.

The CS said one of the things they accused the past regimes of was the existence of disappearances and extra-judicial killings and they had vowed to never, under Kenya Kwanza government’s watch, allow it to thrive but today, there have been several abductions and cases of unexplained deaths since Gen Z revolts.

About a week ago, the former National Assembly Speaker was in Embu where he was expected to deliver the President’s message of condolences at the burial of Eric Mutugi, son of former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti but reading the mood of the people, he delivered it to the bereaved family.

Muturi said it would not be possible for the government to say it did not know anything about abductions because that amounts to shunning responsibility for accountability, adding that he took issue with the statement by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja that he did not know where abductees were.

He said that the cardinal duty of the State and Government is to protect the lives and livelihood of its citizens and it cannot claim to be unaware of such serious breaches on the rights of Kenyans to live free from wrongful confinement and violations of their inalienable right to life.
