Acting CJ Mwilu swears in IEBC selection panel
Acting Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu has today swore-in six members of the Independent Electoral Board Commission(IEBC) selection panel.
The six members who were sworn-in are; Elizabeth Muli, Farudin Suleiman, Elizabeth Meyo, Gideon Solonka, Awori James Achoka, and Father Joseph Mutie.
On Monday, President Uhuru Kenyatta officially gazetted their names.
Mwilu congratulated the panel by saying, “In this country, we take elections passionately. While you can cheat everybody, you cannot cheat yourself and you cannot cheat God. Having accepted to take the oath, we expect you to do the right thing.”
The selection panel are to be involved in the recruitment of IEBC Commissioners.
Law Society of Kenya representative Dorothy Jemator was the seventh member who was to be sworn in but her appointment was suspended by Justice Antony Mrima following LSK disagreements.
The disagreement came about when Nelson Havi nominated a different representative, Morris Mutua from the faction led by CEO Mercy Wambua.
This is not the first time the majority in the LSK council objected actions by its president without following the law and regulations.
In March, the council revoked several appointments that Havi had made in October last year on the grounds that he did not follow regulations.
According to section 87((2) provides that “the Council shall consider all applications received and shall make a decision on the qualified person for nomination to a relevant office.
The Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) and Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK) are the other two institutions which have slots at the panel.
The panel was formed to fill vacancies left following the exit of commissioners Roselyne Akombe, Margaret Mwachanya, Consolata Nkatha and Paul Kurgat.
