Orange Democratic Movement’s Abdulswamad Nassir has been declared as the Mombasa governor-elect after garnering 119,083 votes.
United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Hassan Omar came in second with 98,105.
He won the election alongside Francis Thoya, his running mate, and will take over from departing boss Hassan Ali Joho, who served for two terms starting in 2013.
Seven people entered the contest for governor race the front-runners in the contest Omar and Nassir, Hezron Awiti Bollo of Vibrant Democratic Party (VDP), William Kingi of Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) Party, Said Omar of Usawa Kwa Wote Party, Daniel Kitsao (Independent) and Shafi Makazi (Independent).
Due to mistakes on the ballots, the electoral body decided to postpone the Mombasa and Kakamega gubernatorial election.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s official statistics show that the election had a low voter turnout in a county having 641,913 registered voters.
The election was rescheduled for August 23, but IEBC boss Wafula Chebukati pushed the date back because his staff were being intimidated and harassed.
