A police officer who destroyed BBI signatures booklet in Bomet has been released on cash bail

A police officer who destroyed a book containing Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) signatures booklet in Binet has been released on cash bail.

Peter Langat, who works in Bungoma County, denied the charges when he appeared before Bomet Principal Magistrate Lilian Kinyale.

The accused was released on a Sh200,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount.

His case will be mentioned on December 17, 2020. Ms Kinyale directed the case be heard on March 4th next year.

According to a police statement from Longisa Police Station, the officer Peter Langat asked for the booklet from Kipreres Assistant Chief Robert Katam and upon receiving it, he tore the pages that had signatures.

“…while he was on the process of collecting signatures of Building Bridges Inititative Constitutional Amendment Bill 2020, one Kipsgis male adult named Peter Langat, who is a Police officer came and requested Mr. Katam of the book,” reads the police statement in parts.

The motive of the officer is not yet known, although he appeared “very drunk” during the arrest, the statement indicates.

The incident came at the time the BBI secretariat is planning to close the exercise after reportedly surpassing the minimum requirement of one million signatures by more than double.

Yesterday the secretariat co-chair Junet Mohamed said the team had collected more than four million signatures and was now targeting to hit five million.

The exercise was supposed to be closed by the end of December 2 although the team appears to have given it some more time due to the delays witnessed at the beginning.
