A Mombasa court order medical assessment for 20-year-old accused of killing granny

A Mombasa court has granted police more time to complete investigations in a case where a 20-year-old man is accused of murdering his 80-year-old grandmother.

Abdulaziz Swaleh allegedly killed his grandmother by slitting her throat in Old Town, on January 21, 2023 while she was sleeping.

Mombasa Principal Magistrate Vincent Adet ordered that the accused be taken for a mental assessment test.

Swaleh, confessed to committing the gruesome murder saying he had joined an illuminati cult that instructed him to kill his grandmother.

“It’s true I killed her. I’m sorry, I ask for forgiveness but I only did it after joining illuminati,” he said.

A police report filed over the weekend said their house help, Antonina Bahati, who was nearby, raised an alarm upon hearing the commotion.

Swaleh was restrained by members of the public who were alerted by the screams.

Police told the court on early this week that they were yet to analyse the suspect’s phone data and that of the deceased, and that they had not establish the cause of the gruesome murder.

The investigator advised that the suspect be denied bond pending the conclusion of investigations in the interest of justice, good order, public safety and security.

Police will continue holding the suspect in custody until February, 8 2023 when the case will come up for a mention.
