Plot hatched to impeach Kiambu governor Wamatangi, Kaimbu County Assembly Majority Leader now claims
Without naming the MPs behind the alleged plot, Mucheke, who is the Kalimoni ward MCA, charged that the Governor was being targeted due to his development track record
Members of the Kiambu County Assembly are plotting to have governor Kimani Wamatangi re-arrested and charged and subsequently impeach him from office, Kiambu County Assembly Majority Leader Godfrey Mucheke now claims.
Mucheke further alleges that this is part of a wider scheme that was hatched during the Governor’s first year in office in which there was a failed attempt to oust Wamatangi through an impeachment by members of the Country Assembly.
He divulged that as part of the plot, the schemers have instigated the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to seek court orders freezing the Governor’s personal bank accounts prior to arraing him in court over trumped up charges.
“I have intelligence from insiders that the MPs want Wamatangi’s private bank accounts frozen so that when he is charged, he will not be in a position to deposit bond in court,” said Mucheke during a morning show at Inooro TV.
Without naming the MPs behind the alleged plot, Mucheke, who is the Kalimoni ward MCA, charged that the Governor was being targeted due to his development track record.
“I can tell you for free that Wamatangi is being fought for his achiements in the short period he has been Governor for Kiambu. He has transformed Early Childhood Education across the county and built six new level 4 hospitals, among other achievements,” said the County Assembly boss.
Earlier this year, EACC sleuths accompanied by officers from the National Police Service, raided Wamatangi’s home and took away documents before arresting and grilling him for several hours over allegations of “irregular procurement and fictitious payments” to the tune of Sh 1.5 billion.
The detectives also recovered from the Governor’s house Sh 13.6 million in US dollar bills in an operation that Wamatangi was to later describe as a witch-hunt against him. Also picked were eight other senior county officials who were whisked to Integrity Centre for questioning.
However, Wamatangi later dismissed this as the work of his political rivals, claiming he was being undermined over his uncompromising political stand and safeguarding public resources from greedy individuals.
“This is pure political intimidation. There is no way more than 50 policemen can raid my home and almost another 200 be deployed to various ministers in my government. I will remain focused despite the attempts to intimidate me, I will not buy fear,” said Wamatangi after he was released following a six-hour interrogation.
He quipped: “They are targeting only the ministers who perform because they want to make my government a failure. I want to tell the person who wants to seek the governorship of Kiambu that it is the people who elect the Governor, not the police.”
Also arrested during the dawn raid were the County Secretary Peter Ndegwa, CEC member for Finance Nancy Kirumba, CEC Lands Salome Wainaina, Chief Officer Finance William Kinyanjui and Director Supplies Chain Phyllis Muiruri.
Others were Director Revenue Henry Mburu, a clerical officer Paul Kibe and Bernard Kabaiku, Director Filtronic International Ltd, a private firm.
