Kenya sends a team to negotiate the repatriation of Margret Nduta

Sing'oei told local media that the ambassadors are expected to negotiate a stay on the execution of the 37-year-old to allow engagement between Kenya and Vietnam.

A  team from the Kenyan embassy in Bangkok, Thailand has been reportedly sent to Hanoi, Vietnam in a last-minute effort by the Kenyan government to save Murang’a woman Margret Nduta who is set for execution after she was sentenced to death.

Reports indicate that Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei revealed that the Kenyan ambassadors from Thailand had traveled to Vietnam to negotiate clemency for Nduta.

The PS told local media that the ambassadors are expected to negotiate a stay on the execution of the 37-year-old to allow engagement between Kenya and Vietnam.

This is the latest development following a Phone conversation between Sing’oei and Vietnam deputy Foreign Affairs minister Nguyen Minh Hang over the case of Nduta.

In a statement after the conversation, Sing’oei said that the deputy foreign affairs minister assured him that the petition of Kenya was under consideration.

“Had a telephone conversation this afternoon with my counterpart, Nguyen Minh Hang, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, over the matter of Margaret Nduta,” he stated.

“I conveyed to Madam Hang the anxiety of the Kenyan people over the impending execution of our national and reiterated our request for a stay of execution to allow our two countries to find a path to resolving the issue,” the PS added.

The move by came after Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka and Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino appealed to President William Ruto to intervene in the case.

In a letter dated last week Friday, Onyonka told the government to intervene and request clemency in the case of the 37-year-old.

The legislators stated that Nduta should be repatriated and face fresh charges in Kenya.

The young lady was sentenced to death by lethal injection early this month after she was found guilty of trafficking two kilogrammes of cocaine.

Her family explained that Nduta had sent a man to the Ethiopia Airport to deliver a suitcase to a lady in Laos.

Before her arrest in Hanoi, Vietnam, Nduta had successfully traveled through three airports.

In her defence, she told the court that she did not know there were drugs in her suitcase a case which has raised many questions among Kenyans even as the government continues to secure her release.
