Sakaja’s team approve leasing and renting out of Uhuru and Central Parks after revamp by defunct NMS

The Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration has approved the leasing of public recreation parks, the Uhuru Park and Central Park to private commercial entities after they underwent major facelift by the defuncty Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) then headed by retired Major General Mohamed Badi.

However, The Informer Media Group has learnt that the Nairobi County Assembly members are planning to challenge the move terming it as “opaque”.

Sakaja and his team sanctioned the leasing and renting of designated places within Uhuru and Central Parks.

The initiative, according to the governor, will attract private investors who will subsequently improve the facilities for park users.

He explained that increasing urban demands have necessitated the need for the county government to develop an innovative approach to sustain such recreational facilities.

During the cabinet session, he encouraged private investors to join in transforming the country’s infrastructure.

“This will help establish sustainable income streams to fund park maintenance and development. It will also enhance public amenities by introducing recreational facilities, eateries and event spaces for public enjoyment.” Sakaja stated.

He emphasised the importance of generating revenue for the county to improve service delivery and promote economic growth.

“This initiative allows others to invest in the facility, earn a living and at the same time, generate revenue for the county, ensuring visitors enjoy better services.” He added.

The move is part of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s overall plan to invite the private sector to invest in the country’s infrastructure through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
