Disciplinary measures will be taken against teachers who will be found participating as election officials during next month’s General Election.
Teachers’ employer, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) said it is illegal for any teacher to attend Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) training as Presiding Officers, Polling Clerks or an agent of any political party during working day or over the holiday.
“Teachers should realize that school holiday is a normal working day where a teacher is fully paid.
“Henceforth, any teacher who is found working in the above mentioned positions risk disciplinary action and consequences as a result of absconding duty and insubordination of employer,” said a statement by commission secretary Nancy Macharia.
The letter written yesterday pointed out that the Code of Regulations for teachers clearly states the role of teachers and hence prohibits them from being partisan in any political set up.
