IEBC fines Sh0.5M Kibwezi East parliamentary aspirant for misconduct
Kibwezi East Parliamentary aspirant, Prof. Philip Kaloki, has been fined Ksh 500,000 by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s (IEBC) enforcement committee for breaching the electoral code of conduct.
Kaloki was summoned to appear before the committee to answer accusations leveled against him by incumbent, Jesica Mbalu.
IEBC chairperson, Wafula Chebukati, in his ruling read the Riots Act to Kaloki warning that he (Kaloki) may be barred from contesting in the August polls if he does not pay the fine within 24 hours.
The Kenya Medical Training College board chairperson was found culpable of perpetrating violence against Ms. Mbalu.
The committee heard that Ms. Mbalu has had a torrid time while campaigning since she was cleared by the commission and that Prof. Kaloki was the architect behind her woes.
“Kaloki frustrated my parliamentary campaigns, I tried as much as possible to avoid crossing paths with him but his entourage kept making sure that I did not address public gatherings,” Mbalu said.
Kaloki, however, said at no point has he ever planned violence against Ms. Mbalu saying that the accusations were false.
“I have been the MP for Kibwezi at one time, I am familiar with the rules and I would like to stress that I am a by the book politician,” Kaloki said.
