CS nominees vetting to start on Monday

The vetting of President William Ruto’s first term Cabinet Secretary (CS) nominees will commence on Monday next week.

This is after Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula announced yesterday afternoon after Members of Parliament (MPs) approved the Committee on Appointment which will conduct the approval hearings.

“The committee on appointment that has been passed will meet tomorrow to get a schedule of the vetting before they commence vetting next week on Monday,” said Wetangula.

The approval followed a motion moved by Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa following the appointment of the 21-members by the House Business Committee.

“We agreed unanimously on the names before the house and if you look at the names, they are not just seasoned but members who represent several interests to make sure we afford the people of Kenya an opportunity of a transparent process,” Ichungwa said.

The Appointments Committee will be chaired by Wetang’ula whose membership on the vetting team and that of the Majority and Minority leaders and their deputies is automatic.

The others are; MPs Erick Karemba, John Kiarie, Beatrice Kahai, Japheth Kareka, Julius Kibiwott, Silavanus Osoro, Martha Wangari, Robert Bukose, Leah Soipato, Caroline Cheptoo, Joseph Majimbo, Junet Mohammed, Joshua Kimilu, Jesicca Mbalu, Julius Sunkuli, Ken Chonga, Umulkher Harun, Ali Wario Guyo, Nabii Nabwera, Anne Mugo and Samuel Arama.

The Appointments Committee is required to undertake approval hearings on the nominees and produce a report to the House recommending the approval or rejection of the nominees within the statutory 28 days.

According to the timelines provided by Wetangula, the National Assembly has until November 3 to approve the Cabinet Secretary nominees and Attorney General nominee Justin Muturi, the immediate former Speaker.
