Kenya Premier League Champions Tusker have rejigged their squad ahead of the new KPL season.
The current defending champions unveiled six players who include Boniface Onyango, Eric Mmata, Thomas Teka (Kariobangi Sharks) on a two-year deal, David Odoyo from Green Commandos as well as Eric Otieno and James Kibade from Wazito FC and Nzoia FC respectively.
Striker Eric Otieno and custodian Brian Opondo have also linked up with the brewers from Wazito and Bidco United respectively.
The six players were unveiled in the presence of head coach Robert Matano at the Ruaraka sports ground.
Weighing in on the quality of their new acquisitions, Matano affirmed they had begun blending well with the rest of the team.
“They are selling well. Having been acquired from different clubs where they were accustomed to different coaching philosophies, it might take them some time to get to where they are expected to be, but they will get there nonetheless,” Matano said.
The new signings come in the wake of the Sports Disputes Tribunal rendering the 2021/2022 league campaign null and void.
This is after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Transition Committee was found to have been unconstitutional in conducting its mandate.
Prior to the decision by the Sports Tribunal several local clubs had filed a petition: they include Migori Youth, Gusii FC, Zoo FC, Kisumu AS, and Francis Ngira vs FKF Transition Committee.
This means no team will be relegated, promoted, or declared the winner.
The latest development means that Tusker FC who successfully defended the league title will be stripped of their 13th title.
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Transition Committee recently postponed the restart of the new football season that was expected to kick off soon with the Committee pushing forward the start of the new season by a further two weeks.
This is the third time that the season kick-off date has been pushed, and the Committee communicated to clubs that the season will now start on September 24, and not this weekend as earlier said.
It remains unclear whether the league will start under the dispensation of the Transition Committee with a new Government set to be sworn into office in a week’s time.
Tusker are the current defending champions heading to the new season.
