Elog: Vernacular stations record high number of hate speech, disinformation

The Elections Observation Group (ELOG) says local vernacular stations have recorded the highest number of hate speech, disinformation and fake news in the run up to the long-awaited polls.

According to ELOG, the local stations have been on the forefront in misinforming the public while social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook have led in spreading fake news and hate speech to the larger public.

“Vernacular stations record a high number of hate speech, fake news and disinformation while Twitter and Facebook lead in the social media platforms,” Rev Agolla Marqus said.

At the same time ELOG asked Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) boss Wafula Chebukati to work in harmony with all stakeholders to deliver free, fair and credible elections.

“I urge IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati to work with all stakeholders to deliver a free, fair and credible elections,” Agolla said.

The organisation also singled out Nairobi, Nakuru, Kericho, Uasin Gichu and Mombasa as possible hotspots of post-election violence.

They took the opportunity to ask all security apparatus in the country to ensure the security of each Kenyan irrespective of their political affiliations

Elog implored the Kenyan electorate to come out in large numbers in the much-anticipated Tuesday polls to exercise their democratic right while at the same time maintain peace during the polls.

“We implore the Kenyan electorate to turn out in large numbers and exercise their democratic right peacefully,” Agolla added.
