MCK urges security agencies, media to work together ahead of polls

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has urged security agencies to engage the media through clear communication channels to resolve false reporting and distortion of the truth ahead of the August 9 election to maintain information integrity.

Speaking during a breakfast meeting today council’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), David Omwoyo said that clear and accurate information conveyed to the public would play a crucial role in sustaining peace before, during, and after the general election.

“The media and security forces are some of the most misjudged. Security agencies and media have common roles in society but which most do not understand, sometimes leading to conflicts. I urge for collaboration, especially at this critical time in our country,” Omwoyo said.

He was speaking during a consultative meeting of the Nairobi County security team on election preparations and media safety.

Omwoyo also urged security units to allow the media to carry out their responsibilities, stating that they play an important role in the society.

MCK’s Director of Media Training and Development, Victor Bwire, voiced worry about an increase in incidences of violence and harassment against journalists, calling for enhanced cooperation with security forces to safeguard their safety.

Chairman of the Regional Security Committee William Thuku assured journalists of their safety during the election period.

“Kenya respects freedom of the media. I urge the media to uphold responsible journalism, especially at this time. Nobody is going to harass journalists, provided they conduct themselves professionally. We will protect journalists, just like other Kenyans,” Thuku said.

During the 2017 presidential election, the fake news machine was deployed at both the micro and macro levels, via social media influencers paid by political parties, and on a national scale via Cambridge Analytica.
