Kalonzo’s withdrawal from Azimio will alienate Kamba community, Ngilu says

Kitui county Governor Charity Ngilu has criticised Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s unexpected decision to abandon the Azimio la Umoja Coalition, calling it selfish for the community.

Musyoka’s move, according to Ngilu, will alienate the Kamba community in terms of development if the Azimio One Kenya Alliance wins the seat in August without their support.

She claimed that the Kamba community, of which Kalonzo is regarded as the kingpin, backed ODM leader Raila Odinga in 2013 and 2017, losing both elections to Jubilee and so being excluded from the administration.

“Kalonzo leaving Azimio, I think is a very selfish way of looking at leadership in the sense that the Kamba has been out of the national government for the last 10 years, almost 15 years since 2007 when he ran himself,” Ngilu said in an interview with a local television station yesterday night.

Despite denying allegations that Musyoka was unfairly denied the position of deputy president in Azimio, Ngilu noted that Azimio was made up of several political parties with strong leaders who willingly joined on to have Odinga as the flagbearer and put their dreams on hold.

Similarly, she believes Kalonzo should have maintained his posture of supporting the ODM leader without making demands.

“Kamba votes have about 2.1 million votes, it is not right for anybody to say that unless I am picked, Raila cannot be the next president of Kenya, I believe the 2.1 million votes from Ukambani will be part and parcel of many other votes coming from different places and every region has not demanded that position; that position is only one in Kenya,” the county boss stated.

Ngilu also characterised the leaders who encouraged Musyoka to run for president as self-serving.

“They know very well that he cannot win and become the president of Kenya,” she said.

Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka withdrew from the Azimio One Kenya alliance, further announcing his running mate Andrew Sinkuli for the presidential election on August 9.
