Commission aware of tight deadlines on register clean-up, IEBC CEC Marjan assures

Just under four months before general election, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has a daunting task of cleaning up the voter register.

The commission is yet to audit the register raising queries on whether it will meet the deadline before the country goes to the polls.

The clean-up is expected to focus on voters who might have been registered twice, underage voters as well as dead voters.

However, the new IEBC Chief Executive Officer Marjan Hussein assures Kenyans that the commission is well aware of the tight deadlines ahead and has been engaging a reputable firm to take over the exercise and therefore exudes confidence that the target shall be achieved.

Hussein also highlighted that the voter register clean-up is not a legal requirement for the IEBC. Still, the commission shall ensure that the election’s credibility is not in question.

 Apart from the clean-up, the commission consolidates the register to include the 2.7 million newly registered voters.

Once the audit is done, the IEBC will give voters a 30 day grace period to verify their information ahead of the election.

With the additional 2.7 voters, The register is expected to have at least 22 million voters.
