Man arrested for slapping woman who shouted Azimio at Ruto’s rally

A man has been arrested after assaulting a woman during a Kenya Kwanza coalition political rally in Kisii County.
According to the video which has been circulated widely on different social media platforms, Joash Atemba Nyang’ate aka Sokoro was recorded assaulting a woman who seemed to hold a different political opinion.
Through a statement, the National Police Service confirmed that the man is in police custody assisting with investigations.
“Police in Kisii have acted on the incident and made an arrest. He is in police custody assisting with the investigation and will face court action once the investigation is completed,” said the police.
The service advised the public to exercise restraint and accommodate divergence of opinion during the electioneering period.
“This is to mitigate instances of lawlessness and breach of the peace,” the police advised.
The second in command accompanied by other Kenya Kwanza leaders including Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi, Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula held several rallies in the Kisii region yesterday.
During one of the rallies, the Kenya Kwanza leaders had asked the crowd to respond ‘kazi ni kazi’ when prompted but instead, the lady responded ‘Azimio la Umoja’.
It was at this point that Sokoro slapped the woman on her cheek.
This directive follows orders issued to police commanders by the Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Saturday.
Matiang’i tasked police commanders with attending regular peace and security meetings within their jurisdictions.
“Police Commanders at all levels shall ensure that all election security personnel have a thorough knowledge of their election security duties through briefing and full details of such briefing shall be recorded in the Occurrence Book,” read the manual.
