Senate Lands Committee adopts updated NDC to mitigate climate change

The Senate Standing Committee on Lands, Environment and Natural Resources has today adopted the Updated National Determined Contribution (NDC) in a virtual meeting chaired by Nominated Senator Hon. Kasanga Mueni.

During his address to the Committee members Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko emphasized the important role played by the counties in adaptation and mitigation of climate change.

The CS said it is a requirement under the National Climate Change Act that counties establish Climate Change Units and mainstream climate change issues in their County Integrated Development Plan {CIDP}.

The CS urged the Committee in their oversight role to consider how counties can be held accountable and report their performance on the NDC target to the Senate Committee and ultimately The Senate.

NDCs embodies efforts by each country to reduce national emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. Under Article 4 of the Paris Agreement each of the parties (countries) is required to prepare, communicate and maintain successive NDCs that it intends to achieve.

The meeting was attended by among others Senators Njeru Ndwiga (Embu) , Issa Juma Boy (Kwale), Jones Mwaruma (Taita Taveta) .
