Detectives in Nairobi have arrested a former Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier dismissed from service last year over alleged involvement in a spate of armed robberies in Nairobi’s Embakasi and Kayole areas.
The 29-year-old suspected identified as Ronald Juma Anyanyi was nabbed yesterday by police officers on undercover operations within Pipeline area.
He is believed to be a lead mastermind of a notorious gang that has been committing a series of robberies in Embakasi and Kayole areas.
According to police, Juma and his suspected accomplice who managed to escape the police drag net were riding on a motorcycle that had the number plates concealed, drawing the officers’ attention.
“They (police) moved swiftly and challenged the duo where one jumped from the motorcycle and managed to escape… They managed to arrest the suspect one Ronald Juma Anyanyi aged 29 years with Mossberg Patriot short gun with a telescopic sight loaded with 7.62mm live ammo concealed in nylon.” A preliminary police investigations report shows in part.
The suspect was escorted to his house in Utawala where police recovered more ammunition, handcuffs, and military uniform.
“On interrogation, he confessed to be an ex-KDF officer and on further interrogation, he took the officers to his residence in Utawala where they further recovered another six rounds of 7.62mm, twenty-six (26) rounds of 9mm an HK 21 bipod stand, a pair of handcuff, military fatigue, KDF ID and a military service register showing he was dismissed from the service on 22 September 2022.” The probe report further shows.
Also found in the house was a 20-year-old woman identified as Stephanie Mwende who is said to be the girlfriend of one Boniface Aburiri Wakhusama who is suspected to be the one who jumped from the motorcycle.
The two are in police custody as investigations and a hunt for their accomplices continue.
