President William Ruto has today morning graced a meet between First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto governors’ spouses at State House, Nairobi.
Also, spouses to the women governors were also present led by Kamotho waiganjo and Murega Baichu, husbands to Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru and Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza respectively.
Out of the 47 governors, seven are women and none of the spouses was represented.
The seven female governors are Susan Kihika (Nakuru County), Gladys Wanga (Homabay County), Cecily Mbarire (Embu County), Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos County), and Fatuma Achani (Kwale County), Kawira Mwangaza (Meru County) and Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga County).
The president and his wife hosted a breakfast for county first spouses to reinforce the important role of the governors’ wives play in uplifting their communities.
However, although there lacks a policy guideline on the roles of governor’s spouses and the agenda they should articulate to create synergy between the national and county governments, majority of them are involved in charity and humanitarian works to
“Mama Rachel Ruto asked the first ladies to work together to come up with ways to support governors and their governments. She urged them to adopt a forest in their respective counties as part of the Office of the First Lady’s objective to plant 500 million trees and lead in promoting financial literacy among women in their counties through table banking, supported by Joyful Women Organization’s County-based Economic Empowerment Officers.” A media dispatch from State House to newsrooms read in part.
Further, she proposed a food exchange program where first spouses from counties with food sufficiency would support their counterparts facing drought.
Through Mama Doing Good and its partners, the Office of the First Lady will offer mentorship and technical assistance to initiatives started by the county’s first spouses.
