The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched murder probe into the controversial killing of two armed robbery suspects linked to Unaitas Sacco heist that allegedly happened yesterday which the authority linked to police action.
Through a quick dispatch to newsrooms, IPOA chairperson Anne Makori said the initial investigations have revealed that police officers were involved in the killing.
“The Authority shall investigate any death or serious injury including death or serious injury while in Police custody, which are the result of Police action or were caused by members of the Service while on duty.” Makori said.
However, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the two men were part of a gang that allegedly robbed Unaitas Sacco Munuga branch, within Kigumo town on Saturday, March 11
“The marauding gang of six that has been on police radar had on February 25, wrestled an AK-47 rifle loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition from police officer on patrol within Muthithi area, which they used in yesterday’s robbery incident,” said the DCI in a statement yesterday.
“The Authority launched investigations immediately and has since established police action was an ingredient that resulted to the loss of lives,” she added
Makori said Murang’a County Commander, Ali Numo has already notifies the authority’s Regional Office in Nyeri of the incident and Rapid Response Team from Nairobi has been dispatched to hasten investigations into the matter.
“Upon conclusion of its investigations, the Authority shall take appropriate action including recommending to the Director of Public Prosecutions the prosecution of any person found culpable.” She added.
