Questions are abound on whether the embattled former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i fled the country or went on a visitation tour to the United Kingdom even as the it emerged the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has its guns to the wealth accumulated by the former powerful minister for the ten years’ period during his tenure at the helm of top country’s leadership organ, the cabinet under the retired president Uhuru Kenyatta reign.
Eacc Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak demanded the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei’s office furnish him with all wealth and assets declaration forms.
Matiang’i silently jetted out of the country on February 19, 2023 aboard KLM registration number KL 566.
It remains unclear how Matiang’i jetted out of the country despite the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Amin Mohamed’s office having issued summons against him which his lawyers termed as illegitimate.
“The commission intends to request for certified copies of Declaration of Income, Assets and Liabilities forms for years 2012 to 2022, including the first and final disclosures. This request made pursuant to Section 30(1) (4) (b) of the Public Officers Ethics Act.” Mbarak said.
The Director of Immigration Alexander Muteshi through a letter signed on his behalf by Emmanuel Simiyu dated February 28, 2023, he told Amin the former CS left last Sunday but one and provided all his travel history.
The State Department for citizen services revealed that Matiang’i left the country a week before he was summoned; on Sunday 19, 2023 through JKIA on KLM flight number KL 566 in a letter written by Director General Emmanuel Simiyu addressed to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
“The Commission wishes to request for Certified Copies of Declaration of Income, Assets and Liabilities forms for years 2012 to 2022, including the initial and final declarations,” Mbarak added.
The DCI had written to the Immigration department requesting for travel history of the former CS vide a letter Ref: DCI/IB/SEC/4/3/ VOL.VIII/43 dated February 27, 2023.
Mbarak delegated the commission’s detectives Abdul Low and Paul Mugwe to expeditiously retrieve the documents from the chief of staff’s office at Harambee House for processing.
