Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has urged farmers to sell their maize or the government will be forced to import.
Speaking yesterday in Trans Nzoia county during the burial of journalist Evelyn Ogutu, Kuria told the farmers that they had 72 hours to release the hoarded maize.
He said that the government’s decision to import maize was meant to resolve hoarding by persons who create shortages for selfish gains.
“You have about 72 hours to bring out the maize. And what I want you to know is that we do not wish to do what we are doing. It’s because we do not wish to do what we are doing. We do not want any Kenyan to die of hunger,” he said.
Kuria added that the cabinet will meet on Tuesday to decide on the way forward.
“On Tuesday, I have a meeting with the Cabinet. If the Cabinet says we open doors for the maize, we will,” he said.
