A special probe by the Auditor General has revealed that the national and county governments are unable to account for nearly three million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, worth at least Sh1.6 billion.
According to the report, county governments were unable to explain where more than 1.2 million doses worth of Sh774 million vaccines went, while the Ministry of Health was unable to account for almost 1.5 million doses valued at Sh290 million.
Over 2.7 million of the 27.8 million doses that the nation purchased and received from donors last year cannot be accounted for.
While the nation got 27,818,320 doses of vaccines, the auditor general, Nancy Gathungu, reported that there was an unexpected deficiency of 1,566,973 doses at the national level.
According to a review of the Chanjo system’s data, about 19,597,477 doses had been distributed to the counties as of Match 31 while 6,713,349 doses were left in stock at the time of the audit.
“In aggregate, the national and county level had unexplained deficit totaling to 2,790,215 doses valued at Sh 1,695,665,895 as at March 31, 2022,” reads the report on the Covid-19 vaccine roll-out as at March 31.
In addition, there was the problem of the ministry paying a flat rate of Sh6,300 instead of Sh4,900 for the 44 county workers outside of Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa, which resulted in an overpayment of daily substance allowance totaling Sh4.2 million for the training of staff.
