Ten people have perished in a gruesome road accident involving a 14-seater matatu and a truck at Mtito Andei along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
According to Daniel Mutuku, the chairman of Kinatwa Prestige Sacco, five of the deceased died on the spot after the 14-seater matatu they were travelling in from Mombasa to Nuu Township in Kitui county, registered under the SACCO collided with a truck at an infamous blackspot near Mtito Andei Township.
“Three children aged one, three and four years, a woman and the driver of the matatu died on the spot during the midmorning accident,” stated Mutuku.
Eleven passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to Mtito Andei and Makindu Sub-County
hospitals for treatment.
Kibwezi Sub-County Police Commander George Kashmir confirmed the incident and asked the motorists to remain vighilant while using the busy highway.
“The matatu collided head-on with a lorry after it attempted to overtake another vehicle,”
observed Kashmir.
The deceased were since moved to Makindu Sub-County Hospital mortuary.
