Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Dr. Roselyn Akombe has decried the death of Gichugu Constituency Returning Officer Geoffrey Gitobu.
Gitobu collapsed and died yesterday outside the IEBC offices in Nanyuki, Laikipia county.
“No words to describe the pain of yet another loss of a public servant who was serving his country… Lost for any words to condole the family of Gitobu and the IEBC staff,” Akombe said.
She called for a speedy investigation into what might have led to the death of the IEBC official, Akombe said the sudden deaths of electoral agency staff must stop.
Akombe is remembered for her unceremoniously exit from the Commission back in October 2017 – as the country was gearing up for a presidential election re-run between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his political nemesis turn friend Raila Odinga.
Kenyatta went on to win the much-heated general elections at the expense of Odinga.
Confirmed reports indicate that Gitobu collapsed and died yesterday outside the IEBC offices in Nanyuki, Laikipia county.
At the time of his sudden death, he had taken a three-day off from his workplace in Kirinyaga to visit his family in Nanyuki.
Gitobu will be remembered for his intervention to restore calm after chaos erupted at Kirinyaga Boy’s High School tallying centre.
Goons had stormed the venue, claiming there was a plot to rig the polls.
The post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish the cause of his death.
