The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has begun investigations on several shooting allegations involving police officers during the just concluded general election.
According to IPOA, the incidents took place at various polling stations across the country.
One of the incidents under investigation is the non-fatal shooting of two men allegedly by police in Eldas, Wajir County.
“The Authority Commenced Investigations to establish the circumstances of the shooting causing grievous harm, and unlawful wounding of Mohamed Ahmed Qanyare and Abdikeyr Mohamed Mohamud respectively on 11th August 2022 by police officers inside the tallying centre of Eldas Constituency in Eldas CDF Office, Wajir County,” stated IPOA in a report released on Sunday.
The other case under scrutiny is the shooting incident involving a police officer and a political aspirant’s bodyguard in Uasin Gishu County.
Amon Kibet was allegedly shot by an officer on the night of August 8 in Eldoret Town.
The Oversight authority is further investigating two shooting incidents involving police officers, one at the Mbalambala Tallying Center and the other at Arina Estate in Kisumu County.
In Kisumu, Reinhard Omondi Otieno was shot purportedly by an officer causing serious injury after members of the public started protesting immediately after the Presidential results were announced.
In addition to this occurrence, the authority is also looking into the Mbalambala police shooting incident involving members of the public and police following the announcement of the Mbalambala Ward member of the National Assembly results.
“The Authority commenced investigations into police shooting at Mbalambala Tallying Centre during a confrontation between the police and members of the public after the announcement of the Member of the National Assembly results of Mbalambala Ward in Mbalambala Constituency, Garissa County,” stated the commission’s chairperson Anne Makori said.
Further investigation into the case revealed that the matter had been resolved, and the police officer involved in the case had acted legally.
