A suspect who was found in possession of the Sh100 million worth of drugs middle-aged woman has revealed to court that cocaine nabbed at a house in Utange, Mombasa county belonged to a politician well known and connected in the political circles.
Nuru Murshid Mahfudh, 29, informed the court of the unfolding’s through her lawyer Eugene Wangila
In his revelation before Shanzu Chief Magistrate Florence Macharia, Wangila did not reveal the identity of the politician but disclosed charges levelled against his client were politically instigated.
“I will table a report that will act as evidence that indicates that the drugs recovered were not in her possession, I will table before the court compiled evidence that shows the recovery and the charges are political,” Wangila said.
Wangila also revealed that his client was two months pregnant and her continued detention was likely to risk her life and that of her unborn baby.
Anti-narcotics unit officers arrested Mahfudh in Utange Kisauni sub-county following an intelligence report of persons dealing in narcotics drugs in the area.
It further emerged that the suspect in the matter, whose identity police were yet to reveal, had a Kenyan passport that was recovered alongside that of a man named Farid Shaban Athman.
The sleuths are yet to establish whether the consignment was meant for local consumption or was being ferried to foreign destinations.
DCI’s chemistry and toxicology unit at the agency’s Forensics Lab will have their work cut out as they seek to conduct forensic tests on the impounded drugs for documentation.
The defence team asked for three more days to complete the investigations.
