The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has noted that all presidential contenders, including independents, must submit copies of their supporters’ identification cards.
Speaking at Bomas today, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati justified the provision, claiming that the law cannot be changed.
According to him, it is their responsibility to establish the game’s regulations and provide a level playing field for everybody.
“As a commission we are following the law and we have no reason to depart from the provision,” he noted.
Additionally, he said that they were unable to apply the regulation during the 2017 General Election because it took effect after the signature submission procedure was concluded.
The meeting was skipped by Deputy President William Ruto, Azimio’s flag bearer Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Safina’s flag bearer Jimmy Wanjigi who were all represented by their agents.
At the same time, the chairman stated that elections will officially begin this Sunday as announced in January.
In response to inquiries from independent candidates about proceedings taken against individuals already campaigning outside the time frame, Chebukati stated the Director of Public Prosecutions was responsible.
“As a commission we have asked for restraint from them and also called on the particular individuals to be peaceful in whatever the actions they are conducting,” he said.
