At least eight people were carshed to death in a dawn accident involving a Kisii bound bus from Nairobi and a lorry in Naivasha along the Nairobi-Mai Mahiu route.
Those perished, four women and four men said to have been headed to a burial in Kisii.
The 2am incident also left four others fighting for their lives but sustained deep and soft tissue injuries.
The injured were rushed to Naivasha Level 4 Hospital for treatment while the bodies of the deceased are at the same facility’s mortuary.
Preliminary police findings show that the accident happened after the bus rammed the lorry that was ferrying sand towards Nairobi.
Naivasha police commander Samuel Waweru said four others were injured. They were taken to Naivasha Sub-county Hospital.
“The mini bus driver swerved on the right side of the highway colliding head on with a lorry ferrying sand,” the police boss said.
Patrick Wanjohi, whose sister-in-law survived the horrific morning accident, said passangers in the minibus had attended a burial ceremony in Kisii.
He said his family was informed about the accident by a Good Samaritan who was among the first people to arrive at the scene.
“The person called us at around 3am informing about the accident and I mobilised my relatives and we rushed to the scene.” Wanjohi said.
Jude Kariuki, a Catholic priest, said six of the victims were his church members.
Cases of deadly road carnages have been on the rise majorly attributed to reckless driving, speeding, poor road condition and roadworthy vehicles.
However, poor enforcement measures and corruption amongst police officers, officials from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and officials from the Ministry of Transport have been cited as major contributors to the skyrocketing number of accidents.
