Constitutional lawyer Ekuru Aukot has reacted angrily to former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta’s request that voters follow President Uhuru Kenyatta’s advice on who to vote for as next President.
Mama Ngina yesterday urged Mt Kenya region to back opposition leader Raila Odinga.
One-time presidential candidate Aukot who contested for the presidency in 2017 under the Thirdway Alliance party ticket dismissed Mama Ngina’s remarks stating that she has no right to ask Kenyans to follow Uhuru without analysing her son’s record.
“Mama Ngina as a Kenyan has the right to her opinion but she ought to have known when to speak and when not to speak. She cannot ask Kenyans to follow Uhuru without us analysing her son’s record in leadership. Kenyans are disgruntled rightfully so,” Aukot said when he appeared on a local TV station today.
Speaking at a burial of her cousin in Gatundu South, Kiambu county, Mama Ngina said the President means well for the community and there is no way he can lead them into a ditch.
“Let us love each other, this is our country, let us drive things forward. Let us know where we are going, there is no way your leader can mislead you. Let me tell you the person who sits at the stump of a tree knows what the ants eat,” Mama Ngina said.
Former First Lady’s sentiments were clearest indication of her support for Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader’s presidential bid, which has Kenyatta’s backing after his Jubilee Party formalised a coalition agreement with ODM under the Azimio Movement.
