The court has today noted that the mental assessment report done on the former Nairobi Governor, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, reveals that his mental health and speech are normal.
The court also noted that the report dated March 11, does not prevent him from attending and following court proceedings.
The report further noted that although Sonko is receiving treatment for a bipolar condition, it was established that it has not barred him from going about his daily business.
“With that finding I do believe that the activities entails attending court process, I therefore reconfirm the hearing dates given which starts on 29 this month,” the court ruled.
The assessment had been ordered by Nairobi Magistrate Peter Ouko after lawyers representing Sonko told the court that the former governor was unfit to stand trial on account of his bipolar condition.
This was after a doctor at Aga Khan Hospital submitted a report showing that the former county chief was mentally unfit to stand trial.
However, Ouko noted that while two medical reports show that the besieged ex-governor has bipolar disorder, they do not properly capture the mentally unfit issue.
He then ordered on March 4, that Sonko be examined by a psychiatrist at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Last week, the prosecution dismissed an application to have a Sh10 million extortion case against Sonko adjourned on claims the ex-city boss was not fit to stand trial.
