Several tenants of a disputed plot in Nanyuki’s Majengo Estate were today forced to cut short their early morning sleep after hired men accompanied by police stormed to bring down their houses.
The plot which is said to have been sold illegally years ago at a cost of shillings 16,000 have been a centre of controversy between the owner and the purported buyer.
The developer who is said to hail from Nyeri gave a notice to the tenants and the owner who has also been living there to vacate adding that they continued stay there was a risk.
This came to happen this morning as the hired youths stormed the place at 5:30am and without even alerting the occupants started bringing down the colonial mad house.
The residents woke up to try and salvage their belongings as the youths continued with their work as heavily armed policemen from Nanyuki police station kept watch.
Things turned chaotic as other residents ganged up in protest of the demolition and started hauling stones at the police who shot in the air severally top scare them away.
The neighbours blamed Nanyuki OCS of colluding with the private developer to evict helpless owner despite a pending court case on the matter.
They said it was against the law to demolish a building while residents are still inside at an early hour as this would endanger life of innocent people.
As more people were attracted by the gunshots police had to call off the demolition halfway where the hired youths were escorted in a police vehicle from the scene.
Residents noted that they will not allow anyone to build any structure at the site and they will fight until the old woman gets justice and his plot back.
