21 people sustain serious injuries in a matatu crush along Malindi-Mombasa highway

21 people have sustained serious injuries after the vehicles they were travelling in got involved in a head on collision along the Malindi- Mombasa highway.

The accident that involved two matatu Passenger Service Vehicles happened at the same spot where 15 people died in another accident five days ago.

According the Malindi Sub County Police Commander John Kemboi who confirmed the accident, one of the vehicles in the accident tried to overtake another vehicle before colliding with the oncoming one at Kizingo area in the 6:30 am accident.

He said that one vehicle was heading to Mombasa while the other one was heading to Malindi and also attributed over speeding and overloading for the accident.

On April 7, Fifteen people were killed after two buses collided head-on at Kizingo area on the Malindi-Mombasa highway.

The accident involved a Sabaki Travellers Sacco matatu from Malindi and a Gede-bound Muhsin bus.

According to Kilifi County Commissioner Kutswa Olaka, the Muhsin bus lost control following a tyre burst, leading to the collision.

Kutswa confirmed 15 people died and another 14 were injured in the crash.

Both drivers died on the spot and there are also several Kilifi county government employees who have died from the crash.
