Kirinyaga County government has operationalised the renal unit at the Kerugoya county hospital bringing an end to the suffering of patients undergoing dialysis who had to seek for the services outside the county.
Previously, patients seeking for renal services had to go to Kenyatta National Hospital, which often resulted to delays due to the high number of patients from all over the country.
While on a tour of the hospital, Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru said the unit has capacity to take care of ten patients at a go.
She said the services were offered free of charge and encouraged those who may be ailing to utilize the services at the hospital.
Waiguru said the hospital would also be expanded to 300 bed capacity to ease the congestion being experienced at the moment.
She said already, the county government has budgeted for Sh150 million which would go towards the expansion of the facility.
The governor said they have also acquired equipment to integrate and make possible networking of all the health institutions in the county.
Under the programme, patients from which every corner of the county would be able to post their enquiries be they X-rays or any other complicated medical undertaking to doctors at the county hospital and be able to get their results at their respective center.
“This will not only save residents time for coming to Kerugoya but will also save them money and inconvenience,” she said.
Waiguru said the county was also partnering with the Catholic diocese of Murang’a in developing another referral hospital in the county.
“We are also in the process of establishing a regional diagnostic center which will be equipped with medical equipment like the MRI and CT scans with the help of the other stakeholders,” Waiguru said.
She said during her campaign, she had promised to make health care her priority number one and that must be realized.
“I would like to promise the patients and the residents from Kirinyaga that our Renal and ICU units have qualified staff and doctors just like those who attend to them at Kenyatta and Nairobi hospital,” said the Governor.
