NCCK calls for formation of official opposition post again
The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has reiterated its earlier call on Parliament to amend the Constitution to create the position of leader of the official opposition and deputy leader of the official opposition.
NCCK Executive Committee said the positions should be occupied by the nominees of the political party or coalition that would obtain the second highest number of votes in a presidential election or the party or coalition with the second number of MPs depending on how the law would be crafted.
In a press statement sent to newsrooms Thursday, the committee also recommended that the President appoints a Prime Minister and two Deputy Prime Ministers for the winning party or coalition as part of the Executive. They added that the same should also be undertaken at the county level.
“We are not asking for a ‘Nusu mkate’ government but rather an expansion of the executive,” they said, adding that “the appointments would not only address the issue of exclusion but also enable the nation to have a functional parliament and execute its mandate more effectively”.
NCCK General Secretary Rev. Cannon Peter Karanja said the problem afflicting the country was because most communities felt they have been excluded.
